Principals -  John Elting Treat

John Treat is one of the leading energy experts in the world and is Senior Energy Advisor to IW, primarily focused on alternative energy projects and the emerging emissions-trading markets. With his close ties to both the government and private sectors, and an eye on the R&D/emerging technology arenas, he provides IW with valuable insights on trends and investment opportunities, and works closely on major IW initiatives in the alternative energy sectors.

Prior to launching his consulting practice, Mr. Treat spent over a decade as a Partner in the global energy practice of Booz•Allen & Hamilton, advising virtually all the world’s major private and government sector energy companies. He was also a Partner in a major Investment Bank, President of the New York Mercantile Exchange (the world’s leading energy future’s exchange) where he introduced crude oil futures and took that Exchange to its current prominence, and served for over a decade in senior positions in the US government, including Presidential appointments in the White House as International Energy Advisor to Presidents Carter and Reagan (on the staff of the National Security Agency), and also as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy for the US Department of Energy. Additionally, John was President of Regent International, a bio-fuels (primarily ethanol) company with interests in Europe, the US and the Caribbean, and during his tenure the second largest ethanol distributor in the US.

Mr. Treat holds a BA in Economics from Princeton University and a Masters in International Economics from John’s Hopkins (SAIS). He is a member of the US Council on Competitiveness, a member of the Board of Trustees of the American University in Cairo, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the author of several books on energy and energy futures.
